Review

After a brief hiatus to make way for snooker, Antonio Carluccio and Gennaro Contaldo are back. They’re in the Rhaetian Alps, an unforgiving area in Lombardy whose hardy men and women are famous for l’arte di arrangiarsi (the art of making do).

You’ve only got to look at their waistlines to know that Antonio and Gennaro aren’t keen on frugality. True to form, despite the premise of eating only what they can find, they manage to eat heartily, gorging on gnocchi made from foraged chestnuts, a cabbage and pasta bake and bresaola salad.

Poor old Gennaro does most of the foraging, while Antonio simply sits, grumbles, and grudgingly admits Gennaro can cook quite well.

Summary

Antonio Carluccio and Gennaro Contaldo head to the central Alps to learn the enterprising food skills of the Lombards. Making do with whatever ingredients they find for free along the way, the duo rustle up a chestnut gnocchi, and also work for butter and bresaola - thinly sliced dried beef - which they use for a salad. Also featuring recipes for Alpine pizza and pizzoccheri pasta.
