This amusing curio is written by Paul O’Grady and Sandi Toksvig. He plays Neville (aka Nellie), a “useless lump” still living at home with his mum, Melba (Sheila Hancock) – a tango teacher who rues the day she ever moved north.
Set in the Wirral in 1979, it references record players and “nancy boys”, and Hancock’s excruciating turn at a talent contest may remind you of Terence Stamp’s Bernadette
in The Adventures of Priscilla.
Paul O'Grady and Sheila Hancock star in a comedy drama, co-written by O'Grady and Sandi Toksvig, about a mother and son who both harbour seemingly hopeless dreams of stardom. A talent contest at their local pub provides them with a shot at glory - but the evening takes an unexpected twist. With Rosie Cavaliero.
