Murdoch at the Opera

Series 5 - Episode 5 Murdoch at the Opera

A young opera star drinks from a glass of wine on stage and immediately chokes to death. Of course she does – it’s a golden rule of crime dramas: props in stage productions are always lethal. Dummy razors contain real blades. Blank bullets are swapped for live ammo. And any drink contains cyanide.

Following the poisoning, Inspector Brackenreid – who for the convenience of the plot turns out to be an opera buff – races to the scene and goes moony-eyed over the lead diva like a low-rent Inspector Morse. Thankfully, Murdoch keeps a much more level head and unpicks the backstage backstabbing to come up with a somewhat ingenious solution.

The detective investigates the death of a young opera singer who had been acting as the understudy for a tempestuous diva performing in La boheme. Before long, he concludes the intended victim was the main performer herself. Crime drama, directed by and starring Yannick Bisson.
