The arrival of Ted Danson as DB Russell has lifted CSI right out of the doldrums, giving the series a touch of comedy without detracting from the seriousness of the subject matter. After the lugubriousness of Laurence Fishburne, Danson is a breath of fresh air.
In this episode he’s faced with a bloody quadruple homicide in a nice eco-friendly neighbourhood. So he starts as usual by “getting into the head of the victim or suspect to understand their story”, which is complicated, because three people confess to the crime. But it’s an English nursery rhyme, not a story, that gives him the key to solving the case. Odd but effective.
The murder of a family on an eco-friendly housing estate initially seems to be a straightforward case when the evidence points to a neighbour, who quickly confesses. However, a woman then walks into the precinct and admits carrying out the killings - but her testimony leads the investigators to another potential suspect, who also claims to be the sole culprit. As Russell, Willows and the team try to make sense of what is happening, they begin to realise all three of the supposed perpetrators might be hiding something. Crime drama, starring Ted Danson and Marg Helgenberger, with Amy Davidson (8 Simple Rules).
