Review

Lord knows this series can blow hot and cold: one week it’s watery clichés, the next a gripping morality tale. Happily, the current run ends on a high, with a case that becomes squirmingly uncomfortable for DS Sam Casey.

When Paul Nicholls replaced Jamie Bamber at the start of this series, it felt like knee-jerk casting, but Nicholls has bedded in nicely. The trouble is, he beds in a little too nicely tonight with one of the victims of a crime, an attractive, scared young woman who needs the reassurance of a police officer. Lydia Leonard plays her beautifully. We know Sam shouldn’t. He knows he shouldn’t. But we can see why he might.

Summary

A police lab technician is stabbed to death in her home and while Brooks and Casey pursue their lead suspect, another woman is attacked in an identical fashion. The second victim survives and is able to identify her assailant, but she and Casey fall for each other - a relationship that threatens to damage both the CPS's case and the detective's career. Guest starring Lydia Leonard, with Bradley Walsh and Paul Nicholls.
