There have been a few too many nothingy scenes in
lately. So it’s nice to have a couple of good, creepy ones in this episode, even if they’re basically parodies of those scenes in The Silence of the Lambs where Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster face off at his prison cell.
Here the auburn-haired visitor is Grace van Pelt and the greying psycho is the CBI’s old foe and cult leader Bret Stiles, played by Malcolm MacDowell (the “brainwasher-in-chief” as Jane calls him). An anti-cult activist has been murdered and the evidence points to Stiles – a little too conveniently for Jane’s liking.
MacDowell’s recurring character always adds a ripe touch – stopping just short of hammy – but it’s Jane who needs to rediscover his mojo.
A man who wanted to expose the killer of the Visualise cult co-founder is murdered, leading the team to investigate old adversary Bret Stiles, who was photographed wearing a bloodied suit. As the sect's inner circle meets to elect a new leader, Jane hopes spreading a rumour will help him catch the culprit - but when nobody takes the bait, he has to change his tactics. Crime drama, guest starring Malcolm McDowell, with Simon Baker.
