Once Upon a Time

Series 1 - Episode 1 Pilot

This picturesque fantasy is the kind of high-concept endeavour you’d expect from two writers of Lost. It begins in a magical realm populated by fairy-tale folk, a kind of live-action version of Shrek’s Far Far Away. But we switch to real-world Boston, and meet Emma, a sassy bail-bond agent and Henry, a boy who turns up at her flat claiming she’s his real mother.

Do the two worlds mesh? Not yet, but the neat closing scenes suggest it could be an enjoyable ride. A slight edge means it’s not for the very young, but there are dragons, fairies and a cheerfully unrestrained Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin.

American drama combining action fantasy with dark contemporary mystery, cutting between life in a modern-day US town and a fairy-tale realm. Emma Swan gets the surprise of her life on her birthday when the son she gave up for adoption 10 years previously arrives on her doorstep, asking for help. As she drives him back, he tells her the most amazing story - all the inhabitants of his home town of Storybrooke are fairy-tale characters under a curse and the only person who can save them is Emma - the long-lost daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin and Lana Parrilla star.
