Soap star turned war reporter Ross Kemp is once again charting new territory. Not content with infiltrating a company of US marines, in this episode he embeds with the Afghan National Army as they prepare to take over from Western troops.
Kemp is privy to the first operation devised and executed entirely by the ANA. Their objective: to secure a route deep into Taliban territory. Unfortunately, all does not go to plan and – as insurgents with rocket-propelled grenades surround them – it becomes clear that the ANA have a long way to go before they’ll be capable of combating the Taliban alone. It’s rare to see the stories behind the headlines brought so vividly to life.
The actor joins troops as part of the first-ever operation planned and executed by the Afghan National Army without the benefit of outside assistance. If the mission to prevent insurgents from firing rockets into the capital of Helmand Province is successful, it will provide a template for when British troops withdraw from the country in 2014.
