“My vegetarian diet doesn’t feel like deprivation,” asserts Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, but I’m sure I noticed him eyeing the ducks hungrily when he went to collect their eggs. His challenge this week (Mr F-W does like his challenges) is to prove that a meat-and-fish-free diet can provide him with enough energy, even after a hard day’s graft. And we’re talking proper physical exertion, not just some stirring and chopping in the kitchen.

The food (including a power-packed spicy vegetable stew and a saffron risotto) looks gorgeous. Hugh wearing a wetsuit and buttercup-yellow swimcap for a spot of wild swimming is less attractive.


Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall goes wild swimming with vegetarian triathlete Colin Hill, and gives him meat-free recipe ideas to help vary his diet and boost his energy. Hugh also makes a campfire lunch for a team working to clear a forest, while Tim Maddams and James Whetlor test each other's vegetable-cooking skills by preparing dishes including saffron speltotto, melanzane parmigiana and fresh pasta with fennel.
