Review

When the EastEnders tough guy reinvented himself as an investigative journalist, it was hard to swallow. Yet in the past five years Kemp has interrogated gang leaders, drug barons and Somalian pirates, reported from Afghanistan and Gaza, and comforted child soldiers and heroin addicts with sensitivity worthy of the World Service.

In this series he returns to Helmand to see how the land lies four years after his initial trip. Spending time with Royal Marines, he discovers a more sophisticated game of cat and mouse utilising biometric identification and local informants. Viewers after an adrenaline-fuelled shoot-out will be disappointed; this is infinitely more illuminating.

Summary

The actor returns to Afghanistan to discover what has changed since the conflict began in 2001. In the first edition, Kemp joins the Whiskey Company for a night raid to capture a high-level insurgent, who is suspected of training 15-year-old boys to be suicide bombers. He also learns about counter-insurgency, a way of fighting the Taliban.
