The Food Hospital

The Food Hospital

Series 1 - Episode 1

Can you treat illnesses using nutrition instead of drugs? This series thinks it can, with help from sweeping claims, beaming medical practitioners and those gruesome images of body parts that Channel 4 viewers must like.

We’re introduced to Lauren via shots of her large, hairy tummy, a side-effect of her polycystic ovary syndrome. She is put on a healthy diet to help rebalance her hormones and lose weight, something Chris also needs: he has type two diabetes and for heaven’s sake look away when they start talking about the operation he had to have: some images flash up you’ll wish you’d never seen.

Patients with a wide range of ailments are invited to attend the Food Hospital, where consultant surgeon Shaw Somers, dietitian Lucy Jones and GP Giovanni Miletto are among specialists aiming to discover if tailored nutritional programmes can help. Among those in need of assistance are a 24-year-old woman suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome, and a 44-year-old single father battling type 2 diabetes. Pixie McKenna also investigates the truth about superfoods and the programme features an experiment to see if chocolate can help combat high blood pressure.
