Death in Paradise

Series 1 - Episode 1

Review

If you’ve ever read anything by William Boyd you’ll recognise the basic plot of Death in Paradise; a buttoned-up Brit (in this case the wonderful Ben Miller at his most North by Northwest-era Cary Grant) arrives on a glorious Caribbean island.

Though Miller is not a bumbling diplomat, he’s Metropolitan Police detective Richard Poole, sent to investigate the murder of a colleague on sunny Sainte-Marie. Of course Poole is a fish out of water, stumbling around the beach in his suit and tie and polished shoes and scoffing at the locals because they don’t get things done quickly enough. As far as Poole is concerned, it’s merely a temporary interlude and he’ll be back home in England once he’s discovered how the body of Inspector Charlie Hulme (Hugo Speer) ended up in a locked panic room.

You’ll have no trouble seeing where Death in Paradise is going, as it’s not exactly taxing. But it is rather winning in a quiet way, and Robert Thorogood’s script is affable.

Summary

A British cop is murdered on the Caribbean island of Saint Marie, and the local commissioner declares another officer from the UK must be flown over to lead the investigation. Enter DI Richard Poole, a brilliant detective with a unique approach to cracking crime, and just the man to solve the mystery of his colleague's death. The only problem is, he is totally unsuited to a life of sun, sea and sand - and worse still, it seems his boss back home wants him to stay there. First episode of the drama, starring Ben Miller, Sara Martins, Lenora Crichlow, Don Warrington, Danny John-Jules and Sean Maguire.
