The survival expert has a passion for our forests and wildlife, so he starts this series hiking his way around the ancient Caledonian Forest in Scotland, home to acres of Scots pines, ospreys and the huge woodland grouse known as the Capercaillie. For most of the show he trudges along, peering up into treetops and down into burrows while experts explain more about the ecosystem. He’s quietly enthusiastic about everything he sees but occasionally puts his binoculars down and then we get, for instance, a nifty demo of how to use a particular fungus to start your campfire.

The survival expert sets out again to explore some of Britain's finest habitats and most spectacular wildlife, beginning in Scotland's Caledonian pine forests, home to rare species including the capercaillie. Ray camps out in the hope of catching the turkey-sized grouse's courtship display, and also goes in search of the red squirrel.
