The motto of the US Marine Corps, we gather, is Semper fidelis, meaning “always faithful”. Not for the first time a
character mentions this in this episode and it hangs like a threadbare banner over a series where trust is, frankly, in short supply.
Every relationship is poisoned by loss of faith: I can’t think of a drama that has clothed its plot in such Le Carré-ish levels of mistrust and suspicion. Our Marine hero Sgt Brody may or may not have betrayed his country; his wife certainly has betrayed him with his best friend (though it’s part of the drama’s ambiguity that it’s hard to blame her). And CIA analyst Carrie has betrayed her one ally, the wise and avuncular Saul — something that rebounds on her in tonight’s episode.
Meanwhile, the harem woman spying on the Saudi prince is busy informing on him, though if he is really funding terrorists, as Carrie believes, that must be worth it, mustn’t it?
If you like your drama cross-hatched in shades of doubt, Homeland is for you.
Carrie has high hopes that Lynne, her spy in the Saudi prince's entourage, can lead her to a specific al-Qaeda operative in America - perhaps even Brody himself. Meanwhile, the marine is preparing for a network TV interview with his wife and kids - but daughter Dana is not interested in playing happy families. Conspiracy thriller, starring Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, Morena Baccarin, Morgan Saylor and Brianna Brown,.
