The Reichenbach Fall

Series 2 - Episode 3 The Reichenbach Fall

Here’s an awful admission: in the whirl of Sherlock’s first series in 2010, the thing I found most thrilling was not Benedict Cumberbatch’s new kind of cool or Martin Freeman’s faultless comic touch, or even the languid Mycroft — brilliant as they all were.

But you expected them to be good: the thing that came as a surprise was Andrew Scott as Jim Moriarty. His arch-villain was a bolt from the blue, a playful, slightly camp, black-eyed fiend, who warned Sherlock, in the year’s best line of dialogue: “If you don’t stop prying, I will burn you. I will burn the heart out of you.” In what little we saw of him, he felt like a worthy match for our hero, a villain for the ages, as Moriarty should be.

And now he’s back, making good on his promise. We saw glimpses of him earlier this series, but tonight the Bee Gees-loving, raspberry-blowing baddie is properly back, in a properly exhilarating “final problem” for Sherlock, full of mind games and conundrums and laugh-out-loud reaction shots and twists it wouldn’t do even to hint at. The crown jewels, the tabloid press and Bach are all involved. The deerstalker’s back, too.

The Tower of London, Pentonville Prison and the Bank of England are all broken into on the same day - and yet nothing is stolen. Moriarty emerges as the culprit, and goes to trial for his crimes. However, the legal battle sets in motion a scheme through which the criminal mastermind plans to destroy his old foe Sherlock, whose loyalty and courage are tested to the limit as he fights for his reputation, his sanity and his life. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman star in the award-winning crime drama, with Andrew Scott and Katherine Parkinson.
