Review

A car in Holland cocooned by an army of caterpillars… hundreds of blackbirds falling from the sky in Arkansas… a disappearing lake… If you roam around YouTube, there’s no shortage of bizarre natural events to marvel at. Here, Chris Packham puts his spin on some of the most strange, with the help of eyewitness accounts, camcorder footage, and scientists hoping to offer rational explanations for the oddness.

From Germany we have the baffling case of the exploding toads; in Switzerland a lakeside town is entombed in ice; and a freak storm turns Sydney crimson overnight. The question, in each case, is why?

Summary

Chris Packham presents the first of two documentaries investigating unusual natural events, with the help of eyewitness accounts, scientists and footage of the occurrences. The phenomena he explores include a storm that turned Sydney crimson, moths that cocooned a car in Holland, a case of exploding toads in Germany and disturbing plagues of mice and locusts.
