What is at the beating heart of cultural cool? Why, it’s ballroom, tango, swing and all their sisters of dance style. From Shoreditch to Manhattan, hipsters are dressing up, learning the moves and having a wild time. It can’t all be the Strictly effect.
In this feature-length doc, first shown on Christmas Day 2011, Darcey Bussell argues that Hollywood musicals are just as influential and she kicks up her heels for an interpretation of Puttin’ on the Ritz. She also pays tribute – as only a dancer can – to Ginger Rogers’s performance of Cheek to Cheek and the sunny Good Morning tap routine that left Debbie Reynolds with bleeding feet.
The former Royal Ballet star steps into the shoes of her Hollywood heroes to celebrate the legacy of classic dance musicals, reinterpreting four of her favourite routines with renowned choreographer Kim Gavin, and revealing the secrets behind their enduring appeal. First, she tackles the challenge of impersonating Fred Astaire in Puttin' on the Ritz, which was a highlight of Blue Skies, before playing Ginger Rogers in a rendition of Cheek to Cheek from Top Hat. These are followed by numbers from Singin' in the Rain and The Band Wagon. Darcey also talks to conductor John Wilson, who has reconstructed the original scores from these films.
