Review

There’s a funeral in Port Wenn in this episode from 2011, which leaves Dr Martin Ellingham both solemn and grumpy, a devastating combination. After ticking off the funeral director for arriving eight minutes late with the coffin, he berates the congregation during his eulogy: “A good percentage of the people in this church are clinically obese.”

Just to add to the chaos, a pallid pallbearer, the son of the undertaker, collapses in pain (dropping the coffin in the process, of course). Luckily, sanity of a sort comes with the arrival of Martin’s formidable, clipped and splendid Auntie Ruth (the mighty Eileen Atkins). She’s just as much of
a no-nonsense type as her nephew, telling Louisa, “I either alienate or over-share.”

Summary

The GP returns to his former post at the surgery after the departure of Dr Dibbs, agreeing to stay until a replacement is found. He persuades a reluctant Louisa to move into his house so he can help raise their son, and suggests they could all move to London together in the future. Martin then delivers the eulogy at his aunt Joan's funeral and speaks to her sister Ruth, who proves to be just as cantankerous as he is. Comedy drama, starring Martin Clunes and Caroline Catz, with Eileen Atkins.
