Review

A TV series that produced a boy band that then fuelled the TV series… the Monkees merry-go-round truly was the Escher painting of pop. Inspired by the undercranked tomfoolery of A Hard Day’s Night, the show’s creators wanted a US Beatles, and in 1965 they posted an ad offering acting roles “for four insane boys”. Peter Tork, Mike Nesmith, Micky Dolenz and Manchester-born Davy Jones were those crazies, and the rest is Day-Glo, hyperactive history.

In this enjoyable rockumentary, the Monkees have still got something to say: about their goofball heyday, their screaming fans, and criticism that they couldn’t play instruments.

Summary

Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith and Davy Jones discuss their music career and producing hits including I'm a Believer and Daydream Believer. The programme also includes an appearance by musician and collaborator, Frank Zappa.
