Review

After a solar tsunami flings the Tardis towards 22nd-century Earth, the travelling trio face a hideous threat from unstable technology. In this Frankenstein-flavoured two-parter from Ashes to Ashes’ Matthew Graham, the crew of an acid-mining factory on a rocky island use programmable matter to create doppelgangers (clothes and all) to perform their hazardous work. Which is handy. Except that “the Flesh” has learnt to replicate itself, and when a second storm wave buffets the planet and apparently knocks everyone unconscious, the fun really begins…

The isolated community under siege is familiar territory for Doctor Who, but the unease here comes from not knowing who’s human and who’s engineered. And although it’s a shopworn idea (Blade Runner had its replicants and Battlestar Galactica its Cylons), the scenario sets up some satisfying scares, and the “half-formed” Flesh scenes, where the actors look like they’ve bathed in bechamel sauce, are suitably ghastly.

For those keeping track, Amy spots Eye-patch Woman once more, and you may have
second thoughts before ever listening to your Dusty Springfield albums again. Concludes next week.

Summary

Part one of two. A solar tsunami causes the Tardis to land at a futuristic factory on Earth, where humans are making use of a mysterious pool to create drone-like doppelgangers of themselves. The clones are directed by their masters to mine dangerous acids, but when a second wave hits, they begin to develop ideas of their own. Guest starring Marshall Lancaster (Ashes to Ashes), Sarah Smart (At Home with the Braithwaites) and Raquel Cassidy (Lead Balloon), alongside Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill.
