This superb, magnetic piece of drama was first broadcast in 2009, but is well worth another look, thanks to some fine performances and writer Peter Bowker’s superb adaptation of possibly the most beloved romantic novel in English literature.
Bowker’s real skill is in making something fresh out of a book that’s been parodied (Monty Python), sung about (Kate Bush), turned into sappy films (the 1992 Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche version) and is well known even by people who haven’t read it.
It helps too that the casting is nigh-on perfect. Tom Hardy isn’t the caricatured, beetle-browed Heathcliff of popular mythology – he’s a hard, cruel man torn asunder by an overwhelming love. And Charlotte Riley isn’t the winsome wet blanket of legend; she’s a strong, spirited woman who loves to destruction.
First in a two-part adaptation of Emily Bronte's classic tale. In 1815, Mr Earnshaw returns home from Liverpool with orphan Heathcliff, who befriends his daughter Cathy but is resented by his son Hindley. Upon his father's death 10 years later, Hindley inherits
and forces Heathcliff to live in the stables, while Cathy must choose between a life of comfort and her love for Heathcliff. Tom Hardy, Charlotte Riley, Andrew Lincoln and Sarah Lancashire star.
