Victoria Wood with All the Trimmings

Victoria Wood with All the Trimmings

The multi-talented Wood really cared about television. This gob-smackingly starry 2000 special reminds us how immaculately crafted her comedy was, from a wickedly clipped Brief Encounter parody to a period drama that showed she was an Austen maestro. My favourite is WI, all Dallas close-ups and histrionic music (“Why? Why can’t I join the Women’s Institute?”; “You were let down by your rhubarb and ginger preserve”).

And such was her comedy kudos that celebs battered down her door to work with her (Jacobi! Staunton! Bolam! Titchmarsh!) and, of course, to wrap their tongues around Wood’s magisterial turns of phrase. She is hugely missed.

The comedian sends up Christmas TV in a festive special from 2000. Guest stars including Julie Walters, Alan Rickman, Pete Postlethwaite, Celia Imrie, James Bolam, Delia Smith, Richard E Grant, Derek Jacobi, Alan Titchmarsh, Michael Parkinson and Imelda Staunton pop up in pastiches of everything from a big-band show from the 1950s to a Dickens period drama.
