It’s hard to think of any band much less fashionable right now than Simply Red. But their comeback bid with a new album of measured soul (30 years after their first, Picture Book, was released) is enough excuse for Sky Arts to re-examine their story.

Of course, “their” isn’t quite right. It always felt more about one man than a collective: however much Fritz McIntyre’s keyboard style or Tim Kellett’s brass contributed to the original sound, they always felt like Mick Hucknall’s corporately capable backing group. Obliging music critics look back on how and why they (or he) went on to sell 50 million albums.

Mick Hucknall and his band perform in Sydney on their 2010 farewell tour. Featuring hits including Stars, Fairground and Money's Too Tight to Mention.
