I like the glimpses of Simon Hopkinson’s shopping trips, which here seem to take place in the 1950s because his butcher sends Simon on his way with a cheery “Good day!” Has anyone said “good day” since Anthony Eden was prime minister?

Of course, there is cooking to be done, and Hopkinson (“Cooking means the world to me”) rustles up Piedmontese peppers, “one of the truly great vegetable dishes”. Also on the menu are steak and chips, grilled aubergine with feta cheese, smoked haddock pilaf, and a lovely looking rhubarb crumble with Guernsey cream. After serving, Hopkinson licks the spoon: “Oh gosh!” he says, stepping out of a Famous Five story.

Food writer Simon Hopkinson demonstrates how to create restaurant-quality food at home, preparing stuffed roasted peppers, steak and chips, aubergines with feta cheese, smoked haddock pilaf, and a rhubarb crumble. He also discusses his love of olive oil and Guernsey cream.
