Rick Stein's Spain

Rick Stein's Spain

Series 1 - Episode 1

Rick Stein tells us that he first fell in love with Spain as a lad during numerous viewings of Charlton Heston’s epic El Cid. But it’s always rankled that Spanish food has not had a good press. So he sets out by ferry from Plymouth to start a culinary trot around the country, beginning in Santander.

Here he sees paella cooked in the street and sits in a typically unfussy Spanish restaurant (telly on all day, no carpet) for his first proper meal. Surprisingly, considering he’s both
a non-smoker and a chef, Stein is pleased to see that smoking is allowed in restaurants (although the law has since been changed).

It’s all pretty and luscious, of course, and there are views to sigh for from the window of Stein’s adopted kitchen in a converted farmhouse in the mountains.

The chef embarks on a culinary tour of the country, laced with history, literature and stunning photography. Driving a clapped-out old VW camper van around the Galicia region on the Atlantic coast, Rick discovers places off the beaten track as he samples classic dishes of rural Spain, a country he believes has been underrated in cookery circles until quite recently.
