Secrets of World War Two

Human Torpedoes

Series 1 - Episode 8 Human Torpedoes

The story of how the piloted torpedo was developed, firstly by the Italians, who designed a prototype powered by an elevator engine which was often ineffective. Britain didn't come up with its own model until the Chariot in 1943, which was sent to sink German battleship Tirpitz, while the Japanese `heaven-shaker' was steered by on-board kamikaze navigators in the desperate months leading up to the end of the war.
