Review

Do you ever snoop through people's venetian blinds ogling their wood floors or the colour of their feature wall? Well, this series legitimises such invasions of privacy as homeowners seek inspiration for renovation projects from their neighbours.

Amanda Lamb begins a run of weeknight episodes in Edinburgh, where a couple are hoping to transform the underused basement of their townhouse. But be prepared for a strong bout of house-envy as nerves get shredded over the merits of reflective ceiling paint and whether a generous recess should be used to house a wood-burning stove or the world's biggest plasma screen. Oh, the decisions!

Unfortunately, anyone hoping that stealing design ideas will lead to rifts and recriminations will come away disappointed, although the inclusion of a bagpiper at the grand unveiling ups the cringe factor nicely.

Summary

Amanda Lamb follows homeowners who hope to find inspiration for their own renovation projects. In the first edition, she heads to Edinburgh to help Elaine and Graeme transform the disused basement in their townhouse into a light and airy kitchen, living and dining room. Before making a start, they visit their neighbours who have already completed a similar project for some much-needed advice.
