Review

Antiques expert Tim Wonnacott and chef Rosemary Shrager visit Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, where a 24-year-old Queen Victoria stayed in 1843.

Victoria had been married for nearly four years but although she adored her husband Albert, neither the public nor the upper classes liked him much. So the spin doctors of the day arranged for him to ride with the famous Belvoir hunt to help boost his image. The day’s sport climaxed with a huge feast boasting a special Hunter’s Beef dish as its centrepiece, which food historian Ivan Day re-creates here.

Summary

Tim Wonnacott and Rosemary Shrager visit Belvoir Castle in Rutland, East Midlands, where Queen Victoria stayed in December 1843 at the age of 24. Rosemary joins food historian Ivan Day to prepare a brisket of beef, and meets Betty Elmer to learn about the role of the housekeeper during the three-day royal visit.
