Episode 4: Episode 4

Summary

Borlu awakens in the custody of Breach knowing he must follow their instructions having violated the border law by firing a gun from Ul Qoma into Beszel. Breach want Borlu to continue his investigation and find the answers to their questions - does the elusive third city of Orciny truly exist, what did Mahalia discover and why was she killed, and what is it that connects this case and Katrynia Borlu is determined to find the answers and discover the truth about what happened to his wife. Thriller based on the novel by China Mieville, starring David Morrissey, Mandeep Dhillon, Lara Pulver and Ron Cook

Review

There’s a recurring motif in this grim fantasy drama, where Borlú (David Morrissey) wakes from a nightmare and his wife Katrynia (Lara Pulver) comes and hovers over him, fresh from her shower – a golden moment he remembers from their time together…

The thing is, the whole claustrophobic story feels like a dream, one we never get to wake up from because it goes round and round, covering the same ground but never resolving into anything more substantial than smoke and mirrors.

Inspector Borlú is still trying – in theory – to solve the murder and find out how his wife disappeared. Did she find Orciny, the fabled third city? Did the dead woman, Mahalia? If you still care, well done.
