Another mild-mannered murder in the mild-mannered NZ cop show. The curator of Brokenwood’s Historic Victorian Village museum is felled by an arrow to the forehead, but who would want to kill her? The suspects are soon mounting up, and it becomes apparent that the widowed Charity Highmore-Browne was no paragon of Victorian values. Her real name was Janet Tucker, for a start, and she was deliberately racist to that handsome Maori plumber that Sims took a shine to last week, calling him a “native” and saying that “there was no political correctness in 1861”.
As ever, the show takes its time revealing the clues, but our team get there eventually, even if country music-loving detective Shepherd spends most of the episode holed up at home after falling into what’s queasily but accurately called an “offal pit”…
