Episode 16: Australia's Boys Behind Bars

Summary

Leaked footage of the shocking treatment of young prisoners - most of them Aboriginal teenagers - in a juvenile detention centre in Australia has sparked outcry and a government inquiry

Review

Last year, leaked footage showing the mistreatment of prisoners in a juvenile detention centre in Australia caused uproar; Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull launched a public inquiry in response to the clips, which showed teenagers being stripped, beaten and tear-gassed. Sophie Morgan and the Unreported World team travel to the Northern Territory, home to the centre where the footage was filmed, and hear a first-hand account of conditions there from one of the boys caught up in the scandal.

They also report on another troubling issue: the disproportionate imprisonment of Aboriginal people. A quarter of the Northern Territory’s population is Aboriginal – but in its juvenile detention facilities, that figure is 94 per cent.
