Review

The Big Family Cooking Showdown hasn’t struck a chord with the viewing public (I’d suggest removing that shrieking woman contestant from the opening credits; she’s off-putting), but it’s pleasantly undemanding. And if you’re nosey, who can resist a poke around other people’s kitchens.

Baking runs in the Herbert family from Gloucestershire, two of its six siblings are The Fabulous Baker Brothers. But they aren’t here. It’s two other brothers and a sister-in-law. They challenge the Ayoubi family from Essex, two sisters and their London cabbie dad, who love to cook food suffused with their Syrian roots.

There are some nightmares along the way – burned pittas, bland lamb – but some tasty dishes, too.

Summary

Zoe Ball and Nadiya Hussain host another round of the culinary competition, which sees the Ayoubi family from Essex up against the Herberts from Gloucestershire. The Ayoubi family originally hail from Syria and their food is steeped in history. They will be hoping their clever use of simple ingredients will have the judges coming back for more. But they need to outcook the Herberts, who love to experiment with weird and wonderful flavours.
