Review

Travelling along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Vietnam is a challenge for anyone. But these six Brits are tested more than most because they all have disabilities. Vicky lost her right leg in a rollercoaster accident, for instance, Mary has dwarfism, Lou is profoundly deaf and Steve is a paraplegic.

They’re a great bunch: very open, discussing their personal stories and emotions with brutal honesty as well as indulging in good-natured (but un-PC) teasing. So the result is a heart-warming travelogue that shows us Vietnam from a different perspective but mainly confronts us with the difficulties they regularly face and their impressive determination to overcome them.

Summary

The first of a two-part documentary in which six people with big personalities and different physical disabilities embark on a 900-mile journey through Vietnam. Among them are Vicky Balch, who lost her leg after the infamous rollercoaster accident at Alton Towers in 2015. Others include Mary Russell, who was born with the most common type of dwarfism, Louise Halvey, who has progressive hearing loss and must negotiate the chaos of Hanoi traffic, and Andy Slade, the UK's fastest one-armed man on a motorbike.
