Review

Both of actor/director Noel Clarke’s parents came from Trinidad so he reckons he’s “Trini to the bone”, even though he feels very little connection to the Caribbean.

His investigations start – inevitably - in Trinidad, but before long he finds several ancestors who hailed from other West Indian islands. It doesn’t surprise him to discover a link to slavery, although he’s distressed to discover how his four-times great-grandfather Glasgow Bedeau was born into slavery and is appalled at how they were “treated like cattle”. However, a visit to the island of Carriacou lifts his spirits – it’s remarkable how many relatives he has there.

Summary

Actor and film-maker Noel Clarke starts his search in Trinidad as he uncovers his ancestry, but soon ends up on one of the smallest and most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. There he learns of an ancestor called Glasgow Bedeau who was born into slavery, and how the music Glasgow's enslaved parents and grandparents passed down reveals the part of Africa from which his ancestors were taken.
