The Man on the Platform

Series 1 - Episode 1 The Man on the Platform

Here’s a treat that keeps on giving, a series of beautifully crafted, sure-footed monologues produced and directed by Mark Gatiss (there are two a night until Wednesday) as part of the Gay Britannia season.

In The Man on the Platform, also written by Gatiss, a First World War soldier (Ben Wishaw) recounts two memorable railway-station encounters, one as a child and one much more recent. The latter is with his Army superior officer and is so unbearably sad because it’s the briefest snatched moment of illicit happiness.

New series. In the first of eight short monologues written in response to the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality, a young man returning from the trenches of the First World War recollects a love that he dare not speak about. Starring Ben Whishaw and written and directed by Mark Gatiss.
