In Season 4, new nurse Barbara gets off on the wrong foot, Sister Julienne worries about Nonnatus House's financial problems, and a father-to-be is arrested for gross indecency.
After last week’s terrible shock, the series seven finale is the perfect restorative: if the previous episode reminded you painfully of a loss of your own, there’s tender and profound comfort here.
Of course the constant flowering of new life will always help the Nonnatus House staff through grief, and a sudden flood of labouring young women means the midwives are particularly busy, but Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) has more to say about how those left behind must move forward.
There’s some beautiful writing by Heidi Thomas there, and in the story of the week about a widowed grandfather-to-be (David Bamber) and his ailing best pal (David Calder). The closing scene, in which Call the Midwife thoughtfully gathers its blessings, will have you heading straight to iPlayer so you can cry through it all over again.
