In Season 4, new nurse Barbara gets off on the wrong foot, Sister Julienne worries about Nonnatus House's financial problems, and a father-to-be is arrested for gross indecency.
Don’t be fooled, there’s a really happy, straightforward birth in the first 15 minutes that will bring a beatific smile to your face. But don’t get ahead of yourself, catastrophe is peeping around the corner.
When disaster strikes, the mother of the new mum (played by Shameless’s Maggie O’Neill) blames midwife Lucille, whom she denounces in the most unpleasant, racist way in front of all the mums at a clinic session. This is after snide comments such as “I’ve seen their type [black people] on the buses, but never in a midwife’s uniform.”
Of course she must be taught a valuable life lesson and Lucille is perfectly capable of delivering it herself, despite the misplaced kindness of Sister Julienne.
In another break with tradition, there’s a tiny bit of genteel ribald slapstick involving knitted boobs (to help mums to learn about breastfeeding) that look like iced buns.
