There’s panic in Poplar when a young stowaway is chased from a Swedish ship and word gets out that he has highly contagious smallpox.
As Dr Turner’s surgery is swamped with patients demanding vaccinations, there are smaller, domestic crises to deal with. A young mother is so abnormally terrified of giving birth to her second child she tells lovely, kind Lucille that she simply won’t have the baby. That’s all there is to it.
By Call the Midwife standards this is an almost happy-go-lucky episode with a jolly Poplar picnic and a nice surprise, though there’s still plenty of unabashed heart-tugging and syrupy strings.
