Review

Was it really 20 years ago when the world seemed to tilt slightly off its axis and a country that for so long was a byword for stiff upper lips and stoicism became lost in voluble displays of public grief?

Diana, Princess of Wales, died aged 36 in a Paris tunnel, killed, with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and their driver, in a car crash. It was a dark, banal end for a life lived latterly in sunlight and glamour.

Her two sons William and Harry were heartbreakingly young when they lost their mum, and became the focus of a national outpouring of sentiment and sadness when they walked behind her coffin at the funeral.

Says Harry in this moving documentary: “She was our mum. She is still our mum. And of course as a son I would say this, but she was the best mum in the world. She smothered us with love.”
