Five days of prestige racing get under way, with more than £6.5 million in prize money up for grabs in the Berkshire meeting. Every inch of the ground is studied – and every hemline scrutinised.
In fact, one of the biggest shocks at this year’s event has nothing to do with the runners at all, but involves the daring decision by organisers to allow women to wear “jumpsuits” in the fiercely guarded Royal Enclosure. Must have been quite the leap of faith, given Ascot’s glacial pace of change.
Hopefully, come Gold Cup day on Thursday, the sartorial salvoes will have been exhausted and we can concentrate on the racing.
Coverage of day one of the prestigious festival, featuring races at 2.30, 3.05, 3.40, 4.20, 5.00 and 5.35. Ed Chamberlin and Francesca Cumani present, with analysis from AP McCoy and Jason Weaver, commentary by Richard Hoiles, and reports from Oli Bell, Brough Scott, Lucy Verasamy, Charlotte Hawkins, Mark Heyes and Matt Chapman.
