Review

This series has a way of delivering more than you expect. Dr Rangan Chatterjee’s ability to delve into the deeper issues behind people’s problems can make for astonishing results.

When seemingly fit and healthy James from Lincolnshire says, “Every day of my life for the last 20 years has felt like wading through treacle,” he seems unfixable. At 36 he has chronic fatigue, a constant exhaustion that nobody has been able to explain. And neither can Dr R to start with, until he stumbles on a solution that is life-changingly simple.

Less straightforward is the case history of Emma from the Wirral and her severe anxiety. Could alcohol, smoking and junk food be parts of the problem?

Summary

Rangan Chatterjee is called in to help 34-year-old Emma, who has had severe anxiety, panic attacks and depression since she was 19, but refuses to see a counsellor and instead relies on a cocktail of antidepressants, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and high-sugar foods. Rangan must find a way to get to the bottom of her mental health problems and break the vicious cycle that's destroying her life. The doctor also spends time with James Murray, who struggles with debilitating exhaustion and lack of sleep despite a healthy lifestyle.
