Dara and Ed's Road to Mandalay

Series 1 - Episode 3 Myanmar

For Dara O Briain and Ed Byrne, Myanmar is a real voyage of discovery. “I’ve not seen Dara so happy since the last Star Wars film,” says Ed as his companion’s “nerdy little heart leaps with joy” at a rocket festival.

They also try leg rowing, join in the religious festivities at the Shwedagon pagoda (“It’s like Glastonbury”), consult a local soothsayer and watch the Moustache Brothers, a comedy act who were imprisoned during the military’s reign for making anti-government jokes. Best moment, though, is at a roadside “beer station”, where the smiling Burmese man sitting next to them suddenly asks, “Do you know Cliff Richard?”

Dara O Briain and Ed Byrne arrive in Myanmar at a time of great political change. After 50 years of military rule, the first elections were held, heralding a new era of democracy. Along the way, the duo take part in a Buddhist Festival of Light, have their fortunes read from chicken bones and try to master the art of `leg rowing'. The last leg of their journey takes them up the historic road to Mandalay - not in fact a road, but a river - and when they reach their final destination, they visit a comedy troupe called the Moustache Brothers, with whom Ed has a personal connection.
