Antiques Roadshow

Ightham Mote 1

Series 39 - Episode 20 Ightham Mote 1

“I’m not going to say they’re as rare as hen’s teeth,” says John Foster as he excitedly examines a set of gold and porcelain dentures. But they are very unusual, and prompt a Horrible History of false teeth. The Roadshow is at Ightham Mote in Kent this week, where several items get startlingly high valuations.

One of the best stories relates to a talking Barbie doll – when the owner was 18 years old and just out of drama school, she provided the doll’s voice. Most poignant are some meagre belongings from a Japanese PoW camp including the air-dropped letter announcing the end of the war.

Fiona Bruce presents the show from Ightham Mote, a medieval manor near Sevenoaks. Objects brought in to be valued include a set of hold and porcelain false teeth from the 1850s, which triggers a grim look back at the history of dentures. Plus, Walter Scott's walking cane, and two cricket bats dating back to the 18th century.
