Review

Paxo does the Thames, which will, of course, take him back to his natural habitat, London. But he doesn’t have to go near what he calls “the great Westminster wind farm” to be in his element: at the start of the journey is Cricklade, with its Court Leet, a miniature parliament managing the flood plain under powers bestowed by Charles I. Our guide is less enamoured with the Goring Gap, south of Oxford, since it requires him to refer to Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome, which is “one of the unfunniest books I’ve ever read”.

Bristly, occasionally eccentric opinions are, however, what sets Paxman apart from his fellow celebrity travellers – his entertaining if rather antediluvian description of Maidenhead as “a place for assignations and dirty weekends” is one more.

Summary

The presenter travels along the Thames from its source in Gloucestershire to the Kent and Essex marshes, and delves into its history as a working river going back to the time of the Domesday Book. He meets people who maintain the river's locks and bridges, and work to manage flooding and deal with sewage.
