Fish and chips: there couldn’t be a more British dish. Except, of course, its origins aren’t really British at all. As well as giving us a history lesson about one of our favourite takeaways, Cherry Healey and Tom Kerridge have selected three of the country’s 10,000 chippies to go fryer-to-fryer in a Brixham harbourside competition.

Each restaurant has a speciality or a secret batter recipe that they reckon makes their food the best, but their final challenge is to reinvent fish and chips. One gives the dish a Mediterranean twist with battered halloumi, another flavours the batter with curry powder. Hmm, not sure about those.
