Fish and chips: there couldn’t be a more British dish. Except, of course, its origins aren’t really British at all. As well as giving us a history lesson about one of our favourite takeaways, Cherry Healey and Tom Kerridge have selected three of the country’s 10,000 chippies to go fryer-to-fryer in a Brixham harbourside competition.

Each restaurant has a speciality or a secret batter recipe that they reckon makes their food the best, but their final challenge is to reinvent fish and chips. One gives the dish a Mediterranean twist with battered halloumi, another flavours the batter with curry powder. Hmm, not sure about those.

New series. Tom Kerridge celebrates the UK's favourite takeaways, beginning with a look at what makes the best fish and chips and the trade secrets behind them. Meanwhile, Cherry Healey discovers that the origins of our national dish aren't actually British at all.
