Review

The BBC archive again yields an embarrassment of riches. Taking it from the top are Stéphane Grappelli and Yehudi Menuhin having a ball duetting on Gershwin’s I Got Rhythm on Parkinson in 1976. Piano star Lang Lang toys with his own father Lang Guoren on an erhu (Chinese violin) at the Proms in 2008.

From 1984, there’s Oscar Peterson and André Previn improvising on jazz piano. There are soaring operatic duets and, before it becomes too earnest, a spot of comedy pianism from Victor Borge and Sahan Arzruni, fighting over Liszt and one keyboard back in 1974. In all, an hour of scintillating musical conversation.

Summary

Memorable performances from the BBC archive, featuring singers and musicians from various genres on stage together in shows ranging from Parkinson to the Proms. Featuring appearances by Oscar Peterson, Kiri te Kanawa, Nigel Kennedy, Larry Adler, Bela Fleck and Ballake Sissoko.
