Review

Thunderclap Newman’s hippy anthem Something in the Air bafflingly blares on the soundtrack, as it’s from 1969 and we are in, as the title is keen to tell us, 1973. And there are no hippies anywhere in this dark tale of a murdered prostitute.

You might take young WPC Jane Tennison (Stefanie Martini) for a bit of a drip, as she doesn’t say much and doesn’t seem to impose what personality she has on her surroundings. But her boss, the growling detective inspector, seems very taken with her, as she is with him, and does his best to make her part of the investigation.

But Jane has family commitments, too, like being a bridesmaid at her sister’s wedding.

Summary

The police delve deeper into the murder of Julie-Ann Collins, setting their sights on the driver of the car the victim was last seen climbing into. However, as the hunt gets under way, relations become strained between Jane and DI Bradfield when she walks her drunken boss home one night. Meanwhile, Clifford Bentley is fuming over the attack on his wife by gangland kingpin Clay Whiteley and launches a revenge attack - putting his family's criminal interests in jeopardy. Stefanie Martini stars as the novice WPC who would eventually become the tough senior detective made famous by Helen Mirren, with Sam Reid and Alun Armstrong.
