Review

The concept of this cosy new take on cookery show is simple, and feels as if it should have been done before: hapless cooks train for five weeks with a professional in secret, before serving a restaurant-quality meal to their flabbergasted family and friends. That is, if all goes according to plan.

Here we meet 51-year-old Rochdale wife and mum Julie, who says that being the butt of her family’s jokes has started to get her down. Chef Nisha Katona, whose area of expertise is Indian street food, is enlisted to give her a crash course in fine dining, in a series opener that’s eminently watchable, diverting and warm, but predictably, a smidge mawkish at times.

Summary

Mel Giedroyc narrates the cooking show in which someone with minimal skills has five weeks to learn and prepare a show-stopping restaurant meal, taught in secret by a top chef. The first episode features self-confessed calamity cook Julie Green, who wants to show her nearest and dearest that she is not the kitchen catastrophe they think she is.
