The Real Marigold Hotel

The Real Marigold Hotel

Series 2 - Episode 1

Elder celebs sharing a house in India, on a mission to discover whether they might want to move permanently to the country to retire, made for a reality-TV hit on BBC2 last year. So here’s a second series, with a new batch of famous faces hurling themselves into the unknown. In the first episode it’s a case of getting bearings. Sheila Ferguson bags the room with the biggest bath, while Paul Nicholas shops for the pants he forgot to pack, Rustie Lee takes over the kitchen and Bill Oddie refuses to do yoga.

Even if the new arrivals – who seem a good, varied, comradely mix - don’t have time to appreciate it fully yet, the star of the show looks to be the region of India chosen this time: tropical, colourful, lushly green Kerala, with its fecund coastline and sensational lakes.

Eight celebrities embark on an experimental adventure to India, to test whether they can set up a more rewarding retirement than in the UK. Entertainer Lionel Blair, wildlife presenter Bill Oddie, actress Amanda Barrie, former world snooker champion Dennis Taylor, TV personality Rustie Lee, doctor and author Miriam Stoppard, singer Sheila Ferguson and actor and singer Paul Nicholas take over a 16th-century mansion in the heart of Old Kochi. Sheila, used to living on her own, is keen to make sure she gets what she wants out of the experience, but Lionel finds dealing with the realities of living in India unsettling.
